Presents The Legend of Milarepa A Traditional Tibetan Pageant Tibetan monks of Drepung Gomang monastery promote world peace by performing mystical arts and rituals. Endorsed with the blessings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama Benefit for the Tibetans in exile.
Our story refers to an 11th century Tibetan saint who was born in 1040 AD. Jetsun Milarepa. A poet, musician, and meditation master. Milarepa was the first common Tibetan to attain enlightenment in only one lifetime, exemplifying the great human potential for transformation. His family was very wealthy. When he was born, he was given the name Thoepa Gha, which means "delight at hearing" by his father. Soon afterwards, his father died. In his will he had left part of his wealth for religious offerings and the rest in the care of an uncle and aunt for his son. But, not only did they did not give Thoepa Gha's inheritance to him, but they beat him, his mother and sister as well. Mistreated by a cruel uncle and aunt in his youth, Milarepa's mother in deep anguish sends him away to learn sorcery. Milarepa revenged himslef by learning black magic and murdering his uncle's friends and family. Burdened by his evil deeds, he sought the compassionate teachings of the great Buddhist master, Marpa. Marpa tested his desire to learn for many years before revealing to him the path to enlightenment. After attaining enlightenment himslef, Milarepa chose to follow the Boddhisattva path. A Boddhisattva, in Tibetan, "hero of the enlightened mind," is a being who has reached enlightenment, but made the decision to pass up nirvana until all sentient being are enlightened. As a poet and musician, Milarepa chose to guide through song. Milarepa is highlighted as an example of how anyone can achieve enlightenment through hard work and perseverance despite his or her past. He shows us that we can all transform our hearts. Our team of 10 monks from Drepung Gomang Monastery in South INdia will enact this story of Milarepa along with other sacred rituals, chants and hilosophical debates. The life story of Milarepa has 3 phases: negative action at the beginning, Positive action in the middle and attainment of transcendental peace (Buddhahood). We present the intermediate and the last phase. Performance Part I. 1. Opening speech. This introduces
